The Power of Momentum

Developing Consistency with Momentum

We’ve all been there—we want our business to take flight, our relationships to feel deep and meaningful, our home to sparkle with order and cleanliness. And then comes the ultimate saboteur: inconsistency. It’s not always the small stuff getting in the way, either. I’m talking about sick kids, tax deadlines, church responsibilities, emergency car repairs—the real life curveballs that derail our best intentions.

So how are we supposed to gain traction on our goals when chaos keeps knocking?

Let me offer a solution to your inconsistency woes: Momentum.

I honestly believe it’s possible to move fast and focused enough in the direction of your goals that you outrun the interruptions life throws at you. This idea struck me while I was out running with my twelve-year-old daughter.

Now, let me back up a bit—because once upon a time, I hated running. I could not for the life of me understand why anyone would do it for fun. But thanks to an overly enthusiastic massage technique instructor, I’ve recently become a big fan of barefoot running. Yes—on the street, no shoes. I’d been practicing this for a few months and was already feeling the benefits. I could run 2–3 miles without issue.

My daughter, on the other hand, was brand new to it. And let’s just say, she wasn’t a fan yet. She complained with nearly every step.

As I coached and encouraged her to keep going, I was reminded of my own early struggles. The discomfort, the blisters, the frustration—it all felt so distant now. I had developed a solid running form, and the new layers of skin on my feet acted like built-in padding. I had gained endurance and resilience.

After about a half mile of grumbling, we turned around to head back home. That change in direction sparked a change in her mindset. Slowly but surely, her complaints gave way to quiet determination. I jogged behind her as she called out every rock or pebble she stepped on, still aware of the discomfort, but not stopping.

Then something powerful happened.

I felt this deep, undeniable urge to run. It was the same kind of urge as a sneeze building in your nose—or a baby ready to be born. You can’t ignore it. So I ran. I picked up speed—faster than ever before—and as I did, something strange happened. I could no longer feel the road beneath me. The faster I ran, the more energy I built up. And the more energy I built up, the more I wanted to run. I saw our driveway in the distance and realized I’d have to slow down soon… and that slowing down would actually be harder than keeping pace.

That’s when it hit me:
Momentum is the enemy of inconsistency.

Eureka.

That moment taught me something profound—something I’ve tested over and over again across every area of life. If I want a relationship to flourish, I need consistency through momentum. If I want my business to succeed, I have to steamroll over the distractions with focused momentum. And if I want a sparkling clean house… well, let’s be honest, I might need a maid service for that one. (I just don’t like dishes or laundry. 😂)

But the truth remains: Momentum is key to overcoming the plague of inconsistency.

Try it for yourself. Pick something you’ve been inconsistent with and build momentum. Get moving, stay moving, and watch what happens.
