Choosing a Bullet-Proof Goal ("I Don't Know What I Want!")

leslie householder’s posts spiritual beliefs Jun 21, 2018

Here’s a question that comes up all the time—so let’s settle it once and for all:

"How am I supposed to apply the principles to achieve a goal if I don’t even know what I really want?"

I get it. You’re not alone.

Here’s the thing: when you’ve chosen the right goal, it’s practically unstoppable. It grabs hold of you. Nothing can shake it loose—not setbacks, not delays, not even fear. You’re locked in, and you will pursue it until it’s yours.

But what if you’re just... not there?

Years ago, I found myself deeply discouraged about my own goals. I had been to nearly 100 seminars by that point. I had read book after book about success. I’d felt the inspiration. I’d felt the motivation. But over time, that inspiration started to sting. Why? Because I still didn’t have my own success story to tell.

I remember watching the movie Rudy—the true story of Rudy Ruettiger, the young man who dreamed of playing football for Notre Dame. It was deeply moving. His grit, his heart, his determination—I came away from that film feeling like anything was possible...

Until it hit me.

My heart sank as I asked myself:
"Is there anything I want THAT bad? I wish I could feel that passionate about something."

I had no shortage of wants or needs. I desired a better life. More stability. More joy. But every time I settled on a goal and hit a roadblock, my faith would crack. Doubt would creep in. And just like that, I’d retreat. Again.

The truth? I hadn’t yet found the thing that stirred my soul deep enough to push through the hard.

When my son was born with a heart defect—and the amazing team at Primary Children’s Hospital in Salt Lake City saved his life—I thought, "This is it. This is my thing." I made a decision: I’d become wealthy so I could give back and support the hospital that gave my son a future.

That passion burned bright... until the next bill was due. And just like that, I was back in survival mode—afraid, overwhelmed, angry.

"Where is my passion now?" I wondered.

What I didn’t understand at the time was that my Heavenly Father was preparing me—leading me through a series of very specific experiences that would eventually help me recognize my true passion when it finally came into view.

(And just to be clear—yes, our passions can change and evolve over time. I absolutely believe that. But in this moment, I was searching for the next one—the next goal worthy of my focus and energy.)

So if you’re in that same space, here’s what I want you to know:

You can actually use these principles to help you figure out what you really want.

Yep. You can use the same process to discover your goal as you would to achieve one.

So try this:

Set a goal to find your next amazing goal.

Your statement might look like this:

[Date] - I am so happy and grateful now that I have identified a goal that is worthy of me. It takes no effort to remember what it is, because frankly, I can't get it out of my mind! I am so excited about this one, because I know it's mine, and no matter what obstacle gets in my way, THIS is bigger. I know that it's a goal that God wants for me, too, which makes it so much easier to believe that a way is prepared for me to accomplish it - no matter how impossible it may presently seem. I know this, because I have felt (and recognized!) strong impressions that this is precisely what I'm meant to accomplish. I am ready to honor it and take action, no matter how scary it may seem. How amazing it feels to be on a real 'rabbit' hunt! I could really get used to this feeling of focused, guided sense of certainty!

When you set a goal like this, prepare your heart to recognize the idea when it arrives.

It will come—but it might make you nervous at first. That’s okay. That anxiety you feel? It’s often a sign that you’re brushing up against something important, something big, something sacred.

Be willing to honor the prompting. Be ready to act—even if you’re scared.

If a goal shows up in your mind and heart with peace, and it carries with it the assurance that it’s right for you, then guess what? It’s as good as yours—if you’ll follow the inspired path prepared for you to receive it.
