Another Look at The Golden Rule

The Golden Rule says, “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” In other words: treat people how you want to be treated. It doesn’t say, “If someone is nice to you, be nice back,” or “If someone is mean to you, get even.” It’s about treating everyone—and everything—with love and respect, regardless of how they treat you. When we show up with that energy, we do reap rewards, but they don’t always come from the exact person or place we were directing our kindness toward.
The Law of Cause and Effect says that every cause has an effect, and every effect has a cause. Nothing happens by chance. It’s like a boomerang—what we put into the universe must come back to us. If we put out love, kindness, and service, that’s what we’ll receive in return. If we throw selfishness, pain, or anger into the mix, that’s what will circle back. This law guarantees that the energy we send out finds its way back to us.
In Wallace Wattles’ The Science of Getting Rich, he explains that we should focus more on use value than monetary value—meaning, always aim to provide more real value through our goods, services, or efforts than the money we receive in return. When we go the extra mile and pour good into the world, that goodness makes its way back to us.
Gratitude plays a huge role in this process. The more grateful we are for what we already have, the more we're able to receive. Oprah Winfrey said, “Be thankful for what you have and you'll end up having more. If you concentrate on what you don't have, you will never, ever have enough.” That’s the Law of Cause and Effect in action—it’s the boomerang result.
So here’s a challenge: for just one week, choose kindness, express more gratitude, and seek out the positive in every situation. Watch how those things come back to you.
If you’re stuck in traffic, be thankful for the quiet time to catch up on your audiobook.
If you drop the pumpkin pie, be glad you didn’t burn yourself.
If your employee does something well, tell them! The more you acknowledge their efforts, the better they’ll perform.
And if you’re an employee, be grateful for your job and the service you provide. Treat your boss and customers how you’d want to be treated—and you’ll likely find yourself treated better in return.
It may not always be direct or immediate. The person you show kindness to might not be the one who returns it. Maybe you stay late finishing a project, and your boss never says thank you. But then, on your way home, you pull into a drive-thru and the car ahead of you pays for your meal. The good you put out will come back. It’s law.
Whatever we want in life wants us, too. Thanks to the Law of Cause and Effect, when we take a step toward something—whether it’s love, success, or money—that thing also takes a step toward us. So when we lead with good energy, we only have to do half the work. The universe handles the rest.
One of my favorite sayings is, “A rising tide lifts all ships.” When I raise my level of kindness, gratitude, and positive energy, my vibration rises. And as I rise, the ships in the harbor rise with me. I don’t need to change anyone else. I don’t need to control the outcome. I just need to focus on being better. The rest follows.
So, what do you want to create in your life?
