Worthy Ideals and Success

The Law of Cause and Effect teaches us that every cause produces an effect, and every effect traces back to a cause. Nothing happens by chance.
Everything in the universe follows a law. There is order woven through it all. Nothing is unpredictable to God.
We have the freedom to make choices, but because of the Law of Cause and Effect, He knows how things will unfold.
Even more, our own futures should be just as predictable to us—based on the choices we make and the “vibration” we maintain.
Newton’s Third Law states, “To every action, there is always opposed an equal reaction; or the mutual actions of two bodies based upon each other are always equal, and directed to contrary parts.”
Or, as Leslie Householder puts it, “When you take a step toward the thing you desire, the thing you desire takes a step towards you.”
How thrilling is that? Imagine—what you desire is actually drawn to you. You take a step toward your goal, and your goal moves an equal distance toward you. You only have to do half the work. What a relief!
Newton also speaks of two bodies. Think of those bodies as 1) you, and 2) a formless substance—not necessarily another person. It’s important not to limit the “other body” to just people. Serving others doesn’t guarantee they’ll serve you back. Often, the good we put out returns from a completely unexpected source.
Whatever energy or intention we send out, by law, it returns in kind.
Remember, you don’t have to know exactly where the blessings will come from. Our loving Heavenly Father delights in involving many of His children to help deliver blessings. Trust that whatever good you put into the universe will come back to you in equal measure.
One crucial reminder: your thoughts hold the power to produce what you need, but always align your efforts with gospel principles. Seek abundance not to impress others or prove anything to your neighbors, and success will follow.
Earl Nightingale defined success beautifully:
“Success is really nothing more than the progressive realization of a worthy ideal. This means that any person who knows what they are doing and where they are going is a success. Any person with a goal towards which they are working is a successful person.”
I like to say worthy goal here. My late wife, Susan, embodied this perfectly. Susan day traded stock options. When she chased profits just for profit’s sake, she struggled. But when her goal was worthy—like generating money for payroll or medical expenses—she was incredibly successful.
Remember this: that which you are looking for is looking for you.
