Why Disappointment can be a Good Thing

guest posts law of polarity overcoming adversity parenting Oct 23, 2011

By Robyn Young

"One of the greatest skills we can learn in life is how to deal effectively with disappointments, because after all, life is full of them. Learning the skill not only helps us turn things around, but it can also help us have total peace of mind (and even joy) in the meantime. As we learn to respond to disappointments in ways that are in harmony with the laws of success, we discover that there is always something wonderful to be gained from them."

Look at this picture for a moment:

What do you see?

Is it an old woman?

Is it a young woman?

Or can you see both?

The Law of Polarity is all about opposites: day and night, black and white, up and down, smile and frown. One powerful way to understand something is by seeing what it isn’t—we grasp the meaning of happiness because we know sadness. We recognize what’s right because we understand what’s wrong.

This law reminds us that even when things seem really bad—even very, very bad—there’s always the potential for good. It doesn’t erase the natural sorrow we feel during hard times, but that pain is softened by the faith that something good can come from the struggle.

Life holds space for both sadness and happiness—and both are essential. Without experiencing sadness or other difficult emotions, we limit our ability to truly know joy.

Parenting perfectly illustrates the Law of Polarity. Within that experience, we find the deepest love, joy, and happiness—and also the most profound sorrow, frustration, and disappointment. A parent’s love is transcendent, and the grief felt when a child struggles can be overwhelming. But that immense joy never comes without soul-wrenching moments. The bigger the heartache, the greater the joy that follows.
