When there is no dream

In her book Hidden Treasures, Leslie Householder defines the Law of Perpetual Transmutation as, "Circumstances and things are perpetually coming or going according to your thoughts."

She gives a beautiful example. Our thoughts, she says, are like water—always moving, always changing form. Water might be a vapor high in the atmosphere, fall as rain to the earth, or rest as oceans, lakes, and streams, creating beauty and value for us to enjoy. Thoughts follow the same pattern. Sometimes they drift through like passing clouds; other times, when we act on them, they “rain” into our lives and begin taking shape. Some thoughts even become like great lakes or oceans—permanent reservoirs that keep giving, nourishing, and inspiring.

Because our thoughts are always in motion, two things matter most:

  1. Watch your thoughts, because they will become your words and actions.

  2. Dare to dream.

Watching our thoughts is critical. Understanding this law means realizing that every thought is like vapor beginning to gather. The more we think it, the denser it becomes until it settles into our heart, comes out of our mouth, and guides our actions. Whether it’s irritation toward someone, doubts about a relationship, or fear of an unwanted outcome—if we dwell on it, we invite it in. The good news? We get to choose our thoughts.

If a negative thought sneaks in, chase it out quickly—replace it with something uplifting: a song, a hymn, a scripture. Gratitude is one of the fastest shifts you can make. I once heard, “If you want to immediately put yourself near God’s side, just express gratitude and you will be there instantly.” That truth has stayed with me, and it’s helped me keep my mind positive and my heart light.

And then—dare to dream. Yes, really! Dreams are goals in seed form. I have a friend who, because of limited finances, stopped herself from even imagining things like redecorating her home, traveling, or enjoying more of life. She believed it was pointless to dream if it couldn’t happen. I told her the opposite is true—without a dream, we stagnate. Dreaming moves a thought from vapor into form.

I saw the same pattern in my mom after my dad passed away three years ago. She’s a remarkable woman—beautiful, hardworking, running two businesses, always cheering on her kids and grandkids—but she was in a slump. One day it hit me: she had no dream. She didn’t know if she wanted to keep working forever, but she couldn’t see what else was possible. I told her to just start dreaming again—anything at all. Like in the movie The Bucket List, it’s not about whether you check everything off; it’s about waking up your excitement for life and imagining what more you can give and do in the world.

That’s the start of the Law of Perpetual Transmutation in action. Keep your dreams flowing. Let your thoughts stay in motion like water, shifting from vapor to rain to rivers to oceans. Don’t let fear or doubt freeze them. Have fun. Dream big. Because those dreams will become your words, your actions, and maybe even your life.
