Blessings from Being Vulnerable

I had hit a wall. Nothing was moving forward, and I was deeply frustrated. I posted on Facebook: “I’m so close to having the life I want and still missing it completely.” Not long after, an old neighbor replied with a link to a book called The Jackrabbit Factor.
“What on earth is the Jackrabbit Factor?” I wondered.
So I looked it up. Then I looked up the author. Then I found her on YouTube. Then I signed up for her emails. I devoured everything I could find from her. That’s when I realized—there was way more to understand about universal laws than I had ever known.
I was looking for change, and I knew something had to shift in how I operated in the world. If the only thing I truly have control over is me, then that’s where I needed to start.
One late night, sitting in bed with my laptop, I received one of her emails. The subject line caught me off guard: “Have you ever considered being personally mentored?”
I paused. “Not really.” I’ve always been the figure-it-out-on-my-own type. Plus, I was out of work—mentorship wasn’t exactly in the budget.
But to my own surprise, I filled out the application. “Why not?” I thought. If I wanted big changes, I had to start thinking differently. At the very least, I’d see what they had to say.
The form said I’d hear back in two days. Five days passed—nothing. So I emailed to follow up, just in case. To my shock, I got a response from Leslie Householder herself.
She asked a few personal questions to see if I’d be a fit for her mentorship program. And here’s where everything shifted. In the past, I would’ve crafted the perfect response, showcasing my best self—the polished, put-together version.
But not this time.
This time, I needed real change. That meant no more pretending. So I told her the truth. All of it. The good, the bad, the messy. I shared things I’d never told anyone before. I can’t say for sure (you’d have to ask her), but I think my raw honesty might have caught her off guard. I know it surprised me.
We kept corresponding, and as fate would have it, we discovered that I had recently done work at a studio—work that lined up almost perfectly with what she needed to get her books on Audible. It wasn’t an exact match, but I knew enough to figure it out, and I knew people who could help fill in the gaps.
Long story short: I was looking for tools to create positive change in my life—and Leslie had them. She was looking for someone to help her get her work onto Audible—and I could help.
None of it would have happened if I hadn’t dared to ask for change. It wouldn’t have happened if I had listened to that voice that said, “You don’t have the money. Don’t bother.” It wouldn’t have happened if I had sent the usual, polished version of myself instead of the real one.
The Law of Cause and Effect teaches, “When you make an effort to take a step toward the life you want, the life you want takes a step toward you.”
This experience was proof of that truth.
