Things Could Be Worse!

guest posts law of relativity overcoming adversity Feb 16, 2018

By Stephanie Francom

Am I the only one who’s struggled to keep my thoughts consistently positive? Surely not. But I’ve found something that’s really helping—and I want to share it with you. It’s The Law of Relativity!

So what is The Law of Relativity, anyway? In short: Nothing that happens is inherently good or bad. It only seems that way depending on how you compare it to something else.

And how can this law help you reach your goals? Well, the more you learn about manifesting your dreams, the more you realize how important it is to keep your thoughts and emotions in a good place. That’s where this law really shines—especially when life throws you a curveball.

Let me tell you a story.

Once upon a time… during the Christmas holidays, my entire family got sick. And not just a little sick—really sick. There were ten of us, including my married daughter and her family. We all had high fevers (hers hit 104.5°), headaches, sore throats, nasty coughs, chills, and full-body aches. It started a few days before Christmas and dragged on until a few days after.

My not-so-large bedroom looked like a scene from a battlefield—sick bodies everywhere. I should’ve taken a picture! A couple of us in the bed, some in chairs, and the rest camped out on the floor under blankets. No one had an appetite, and staying hydrated felt like a full-time job. We were just trying to keep everyone out of the ER. All our holiday plans—gingerbread houses, cookie decorating, caroling—were replaced with tissue piles, Gatorade bottles, and cough drops.

But thankfully, I had just started learning about the Laws of Thought—and I remembered this one!

Lying in bed, I had a thought that totally shifted things for me. I imagined some of my ancestors making their winter trek across the plains to Salt Lake City. They had to press forward every single day, no matter how they felt. I pictured myself in that same condition—feverish, aching—having to keep walking. It hit me just how blessed I actually was. I was warm. I had clean water, indoor plumbing, a soft bed, and chicken soup. My son-in-law, who never got sick, cheerfully served every single one of us. My grandkids, somehow still full of joy, kept our spirits lifted. And to top it off, our flu was viral—not bacterial. (From what I understand, bacterial infections often bring emotional lows; viral ones usually don’t affect your mood the same way.)

So yes, we were physically miserable, but emotionally? We were okay. In fact, we were even… happy.

As soon as I shifted my focus to how much worse it could have been, gratitude rushed in. And that gratitude lifted my vibration. Honestly, we made some sweet, unexpected memories in that mess. We laughed. We bonded. We leaned on each other. And we came out stronger and closer because of it.

The Law of Relativity helped me turn a rough situation into something meaningful. It reminded me that how I see things matters. It always does.
