The Ups & Downs of Life – Living the Law of Rhythm

guest posts law of rhythm overcoming adversity trust Jul 19, 2008

By Denise Webster

Just like the rise and fall of ocean waves, the Law of Rhythm is always at work in our lives. It states:
"When you feel down, be grateful—because (by law) an upswing is coming."

You can visualize this law as a wavy line—rolling up and down. That image alone can be a lifeline during tough times. Why? Because when you’re in a low point, remembering this law gives you hope. It reminds you that the low is temporary and an upswing is not just possible—it’s inevitable.

Now, that might not feel encouraging at first glance. But picture this: instead of a wavy line that moves horizontally, imagine one that angles upward. What that means is, even though you may still have low moments, those lows aren’t as low as they used to be. You're rising. You're learning. You're growing. And that’s exactly how this law has played out in my life.

My husband works in construction, and over our 22+ years in business, we’ve seen the patterns. Some months are slower. Some seasons are lean. But over time, that wavy line of progress keeps angling upward. We’ve learned to expect the rhythm. And as long as the overall direction is growth, we can ride the waves.

But this past year hit differently. As you probably know, the market shifted. Home sales dropped, construction slowed, and fear started sweeping through the economy. Foreclosures. Bankruptcies. Layoffs. And with fear comes panic, anxiety, and—yes—depression. I’ve been there before.

Just a week before Christmas, my husband came home and said, “For the first time since we opened our doors, I have no orders in the box.

A few years ago, that would’ve wrecked me. I would’ve spiraled. Cancelled Christmas. Crawled into a fear cave and stayed there. But this time was different.

As soon as he said it, a deep peace washed over me—followed by a picture of that wavy line. I recognized the moment for what it was: a dip in the rhythm. A low, yes—but I trusted the upswing was already in motion. The only question was: could we weather it?

That’s when the miracles started happening.

In my prayers, I leaned hard into gratitude. I thanked God for our business, for the many years it had supported us, for our loyal employees, and for the abundance we’d already experienced. I poured my heart into gratitude without even asking for more.

Not long after, my husband called me. He had to hang up because someone had lost their load in the middle of the road, and he was pulling over to help. It turned out to be the very man who had once helped one of our employees when he lost a load of countertops years ago. My husband had always wanted to find a way to return the favor.

By the time he got parked, the load was mostly handled—but he still walked up to thank him. And the man said, “I’m so glad you stopped. I actually have a set of plans in my truck I wanted to give you to bid.”

Tears filled my eyes when I heard that. We thought we were showing up to give—and instead we were being given to. Again.

More moments like that followed—little miracles that kept the business afloat during the low point. We never had to lay off a single employee. Work continued to come in—just enough, then more. And now, even as many continue to struggle, we’re feeling blessed beyond measure.

The Law of Rhythm doesn’t promise that we won’t have down seasons. It promises that the upswing will come. And if we stay balanced, stay centered, stay grateful—we’ll not only get through the dip, we’ll come out stronger than we were before.

How grateful I am for that truth.
