My friend Kevin Allen used to stop by the local QT convenience store every morning for a donut and a drink—and he did this for years. Occasionally, he would write about his encounters there, and they never failed to entertain, amuse, or inspire. With his permission, I’m excited to start sharing some of his “QT Chronicles” with you.

I go to the same Circle K every morning when I’m not at QT. Today, the lines were unusually long, and somehow—I accidentally picked the faster-moving one. I hope I didn’t throw off the Universe.

While I waited, I watched the other line. A man had begun doing his “Lotto business” for the week. (It’s Wednesday, after all.) There were only two people behind him, but I’m pretty sure—an hour later—he’s still there, carefully preparing for the jackpot he’s convinced is coming.

When it was my turn, I looked over at the two waiting behind him and waved them over to jump ahead of me. Even though a half-dozen people were behind me, to my surprise... not a single grumble. Everyone nodded in agreement.

The first guy who took the offer checked out quickly—and then turned and paid for my donut and my health-food drink. I thanked him and paid for the guy behind me. Then I watched as he paid for the guy behind him.

The chain reaction continued—at least four more people paid it forward before I’d even made it to the door. It helped that most people were just holding a donut and a coffee. Nobody (except the guy who treated me) spent more than they would have anyway—but everyone walked out feeling like they’d done a good deed for the day. Even the clerk got a kick out of it.

When I left, the whole store was full of smiles.

Well—except for the Lotto guy, who was still laser-focused on organizing his tickets, determined to win a hundred million dollars tonight.

The rest of us?
We already won.
