The Law of Cause and Effect - The Law of the Harvest

There’s an old Indian proverb that says, “Man who stands on mountain with mouth wide open wait long time for roast turkey to fly in.” If you want something, you have to take action to get it. Nothing comes to someone who doesn’t do their part. The job won’t come to the person who just sits by the phone waiting for the employer to call.
The Bible teaches us, “Whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.” The Law of Cause and Effect is also known as the Law of the Harvest. Whatever you put out into the world will come back to you. If you put out very little, very little will come back. If you put out a lot, a lot will come back.
I teach at a private college whose niche is helping those who struggle to succeed at a four-year university—it’s their last hope for education. Amazingly, many of these students do the bare minimum just to get by. They’re satisfied with a D-, just because it’s passing. They graduate with degrees but without marketable skills. Then they get upset when we can’t help them land the jobs they expect. They’re getting exactly what they put into their education.
On the other hand, we have many students who are diligent and committed. They study hard, develop real skills, and we have no trouble helping them find jobs in their fields. They graduate with marketable skills and the determination to build better lives.
Every cause has an effect, and every effect has a cause. Every decision has consequences, and every consequence follows a decision. If you want a certain outcome, find the decision that leads to it—and make it.
I believe the scripture that says, “Seek ye diligently and ye shall find.” Diligently is the key word. What you seek with passion and persistence, you will find. What you seek half-heartedly may come to you half-heartedly—or not at all.
An ancient prophet in the Americas asked, “Do ye suppose that the Lord will [help] us, while we sit upon our thrones and do not make use of the means which the Lord has provided for us?” We all have the ability to think, reason, gather information, and decide. We have resources in family, friends, community, and government. Set your goal clearly—what you want to have, who you want to become. Then move your feet and do your part. As you act, doors will open, your mind will clear, and the right circumstances will come to help you achieve your goals.
So, take a good look at your life—what you have and who you are. If you’re not happy, don’t just stand there with your mouth wide open, waiting for the roast turkey to fly in. Go out and do something. Go get what you want. Become who you want to be. It all starts with believing you can—and then moving your feet.
