Team Steam vs. Team Dream

I have two stories I want to share that illustrate how the Law of Cause and Effect plays out in real life. One highlights what not to do, and the other demonstrates how powerful this law can be when we’re in alignment with it.
Story #1: When Our Focus Was Misplaced
Several years ago, my husband and I were building an MLM business. We were following the guidance from our mentors to a T—showing up, applying the strategies, checking the boxes—and it was working. We were having real success. In fact, we even won a free trip and helped others on our team qualify for that trip, too.
Each week, we’d meet with our mentors to review progress, make adjustments, and set new goals. But those meetings also became a place where we’d let off steam—venting about what our team members were doing wrong, what we were doing wrong, and what we “should have” done differently. I often left those meetings feeling drained, defeated, and guilty. And unfortunately, that energy spilled into how we led our team. We’d bring those same criticisms back to them—pointing out their shortcomings, telling them what they needed to fix, and trying to solve their problems for them.
After hitting some major milestones, we were shocked when—within just a few weeks—our top leaders stopped working. Our volume dropped in half. So did our commissions.
We couldn’t figure it out. We had helped these people earn a trip! We had poured in so much time and effort. What went wrong?
Looking back, the answer is painfully clear: our hearts weren’t truly invested in them—they were invested in what we stood to gain. Instead of championing their wins and uplifting them with a positive, belief-driven mindset, we fixated on their flaws. We gave off the energy of “we’re doing all the work, no one’s helping us”—and per the Law of Cause and Effect, that’s exactly what we got.
That law says: for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. So when we focused on lack and frustration, we received more lack and frustration. Had we chosen instead to focus on what our teammates were doing right, and genuinely served them with love and belief, we would have received the same in return.
Story #2: The Power of Encouragement
Now for the opposite kind of experience—with a much happier ending.
I enrolled in a sailing class that’s been operating for 58 years. The format was simple: 16 students, each paired with a boat partner and instructor. After each lesson, we’d head out on the water to practice.
And let me tell you—I made so many mistakes. I nearly capsized the boat, spun us in uncontrollable 360s, and almost rammed the dock. But through it all, my instructor was calm, cheerful, and encouraging. Yes, she had to grab the tiller from me a few times to avoid disaster, but not once did she scold me. Instead, she celebrated the learning process and let me talk through each mistake. Her love for sailing—and for teaching—was obvious. And I felt that she truly cared about me.
She answered my questions, helped me through my struggles, and stayed patient and kind. The same was true for all the instructors—some students in our group were terrified of the ocean, and their instructors were just as supportive. By the end of the class, every single one of us passed our solo sailing exam with flying colors.
This program has thrived for nearly six decades because of how they treat people. They pour in time, energy, joy, and love—not just to teach a skill, but to uplift others and make learning enjoyable.
Both stories demonstrate the Law of Cause and Effect in action—especially in relationships.
-
The first approach drove people away, created discouragement, and damaged our business.
-
The second built trust, friendship, and respect—leading to long-term success and legacy.
When we lead with criticism, fear, or frustration, we eventually get more of the same. But when we lead with encouragement, belief, and genuine care, we sow the kind of energy that multiplies in the best ways.
It’s not just a law—it’s a pattern. And it’s always working.
