Strange Surfer Wisdom
Nov 12, 2010
We all wish life could be a little easier sometimes—peaceful, tranquil, smooth.
I know—I’ve felt that way too.
But the last time I found myself caught in the middle of a turbulent, disruptive, high-pressure life challenge, an unexpected image came to mind. Now, I’m not a surfer—and I don’t live anywhere near an ocean—so this might sound strange... but here’s what I saw:
A surfer zooming through a wave tube, the photo captured from the surfer’s point of view.
The surfer is flying forward at high speeds, heading out of the tunnel and into the sunlight.
That image stopped me. It was suddenly clear that the momentum I was experiencing—both in my business and my personal growth—was happening because of the chaos around me, and because of my determination to rise above it.
Do you have destructive forces surrounding you?
Are you determined to get out from under them?
I had been doing my best to keep my eyes fixed on where I was going, trying not to let the crashing waves distract or defeat me. It wasn’t easy. But I believe that image was God’s way of telling me:
“These challenges are helping you. Keep going. You’re going to make it.”
It amazed me to realize: those destructive forces, combined with my focus, were actually working together to push me forward.
Can you see how keeping my eyes locked on the exit of that tunnel was the best thing I could’ve done? Not fighting the waves—just riding them with purpose.
Now picture this:
Imagine me surfing inside a wave tube, zooming forward, and suddenly turning toward the wave, trying to push it back with my bare hands. Arms outstretched, bracing against the water.
Ridiculous, right? I'd get clobbered.
That’s what it's like when we waste our energy trying to stop life's challenges instead of riding them out with focus and faith.
Trying to stop the waves is futile—it’s true in surfing, and it’s true in life.
Let this sink in:
Waves of opposition are part of life. And you can exhaust yourself trying to push them away… or you can let them be what they are, focus on where you’re headed, and let them carry you.
Whether those forces destroy you or drive you forward depends on one thing:
Where you put your focus, your energy, and your attention.
Surfers get this.
The best ones actually want the biggest waves—because they’ve learned how to harness the very thing that threatens to crush them. They use it to shoot forward, out of the dark tunnel, into the light.
Have you heard about the Law of Polarity that says, “the worse things are, the better”?
Maybe now you can see why.
The stronger the wave, the faster you can travel.
Now here’s the contrast:
A picture of the life we think we want.
Peaceful. Still. Calm.
I call this picture: “shark bait.”
Sure, it looks peaceful. But he's not going anywhere.
So be grateful for your challenges… they’re moving you forward. Don’t let appearances of doom convince you otherwise. Let them be what they are, and stay focused on your destination.
It takes faith to think this way, but one day you’ll look back and see how every disappointment, every delay, every trial was part of the journey.
Feeling gratitude now—even in the chaos—tunes your mind to the frequency of solutions. Genius solutions. Ones you haven’t even thought of yet.
So remember:
The turbulence may be loud and messy…
But if you keep your eyes on the horizon,
It just might be the very thing that launches you forward.
