Stop the World - I want to Get Off!

leslie householder’s posts spiritual beliefs Jun 26, 2013

“I’m in a hurry to get things done, I’m... rushing, rushing till life’s no fun.”

Does that lyric from Alabama’s song feel a little too familiar?

Has life become so fast-paced that you feel caught in the whirlwind—completely out of control?
Are you running so hard you don’t even have time to stop and catch your breath, stuck on a treadmill that seems to be going nowhere?

Eventually, you have to pause and ask yourself, “What’s the point?”

Even if you have a clear sense of your life’s purpose—if you feel aligned with why you’re here—it’s still easy to fall into the trap of constant motion.
Deadlines. Obligations. Expectations. It’s exhausting.

But then comes a whisper from somewhere deep inside:
“You were born for something more than this.”
Or, “Why does peace and happiness always seem to be just one more task away?”

What do you do with that voice?

First of all, listen to it.
It’s healthy to recognize those impressions. They’re true. You were meant for more. You wouldn’t feel that nudge unless something greater was calling you—inviting you to show up more fully, make a meaningful difference, or stop postponing your happiness.

The question is: Where do you begin?

Start here: Today, give your best to whatever you’ve already committed to.
If you want to change your life—or escape whatever kind of bondage you feel stuck in—you have to fully live the life you’re in.
Show up. Be present. Be complete in the moment you’re already in.

When you truly fill your place, you outgrow your current circumstances. And when that happens, your circumstances have no choice but to change.
They must expand just to hold the bigger version of you.

As James Allen wrote in As a Man Thinketh, "When a person completely and genuinely alters his or her thoughts about his or her [problem], and discovers the true perspective that God intends for him or her to adopt, it will “become so out of harmony with his mentality that it falls out of his life as a garment is cast aside, and, with the growth of opportunities, which fit the scope of his expanding powers, he passes out of it forever.”

Wallace D. Wattles put it this way:

“You can advance only by more than filling your present place.”

In other words—don’t wait until you have time to do something new and grandiose.
Be grandiose where you are.
Be your most spectacular self in the very thing you’re already doing.

Want a better job? Become bigger than the one you have now.
Do it with more care, more heart, more joy than ever before.
And soon, it won’t be able to contain you anymore. New opportunities will begin to appear because you’ve grown into someone who’s ready for more.

Does that mean becoming superhuman and getting ten times more done?
No. It means being present.
If you’re working on something, enjoy the task. Do it well. Take pleasure in it.

Even if your life is packed and you can’t slow down, you can still move through it with a calm spirit.
Deadlines and pressures are just events. We’re the ones who add the stress. And when we try to force things to happen, we actually get in the way.
Because force negates. What you push, pushes back.

So much of what needs to happen is out of your control.
Let it go. It’s not your job to manage the universe.
Your job is to do your part—and trust God to handle the rest.

When you stay calm, He steps in.
When you’re frantic, it can feel like He steps back—maybe to let you learn that you’re not supposed to do it alone.
At least, that’s how it’s played out for me.

Eventually, I had to ask:
“How many times do I need to feel abandoned before I finally realize—I can’t do this on my own?”

So I’m learning to breathe. To slow down.
To trust.

Let’s resign from our position as Manager of the Universe.
Let’s believe that a calm spirit puts us in alignment with the blessings that are waiting to flow our way.
Frantic energy blocks the flow.
Worry and stress are signs of doubt.
But faith has no room for fear.

Lately, I’ve been reading the book of Mark again—just slowly working my way through. I’m about seven chapters in.
This time, I’ve made the effort to really imagine being there—to picture myself witnessing those miracles firsthand.

And I have to say... it’s hard to read those chapters and not start believing something good could happen to me, too.

Jesus didn’t just bless the righteous. He showed mercy to the broken-hearted—those just hoping for relief.

So no matter how you feel about yourself right now, you can be blessed with an abundant life.

Need a “faith-lift”?
Maybe you should read Mark.
(Why Mark? Honestly, because it’s the shortest gospel. If your time is limited like mine, it’s a great one to start with.)
