Stepping In

Have you ever felt prompted to move forward with something that filled you with fear and uncertainty—but deep down, you knew that if you just did it, it could turn into something incredible? I think most of us have had moments like that. Not everyone finds the courage right away to step into what they feel called to do. I’ve had many of those experiences myself, and honestly, sometimes it has taken me months to act on something I felt inspired to do. But each time I finally took that step, it worked out just the way it needed to.
I want to share one of those moments with you—because maybe it’ll give you the courage to follow through on whatever is tugging at your heart right now.
Not long ago, I took a course that helped me understand more about how my mind works—and how I could start thinking differently to create the life I want and succeed in the things that matter to me. Several months after finishing the course, I felt prompted to reach out to a transitional housing program to see if I could offer a presentation on overcoming anxiety.
The idea stopped me in my tracks.
I was frozen. Paralyzed by thoughts like:
“I’m no expert.”
“What could I possibly offer them?”
“I’m broken.”
“I’m not great at teaching others.”
That inner dialogue kept me from acting for a long time. I shoved the thought aside, too scared to follow through—but it wouldn’t leave me alone. Eventually, I found the courage to just make the call. I still didn’t feel ready. I wasn’t polished, I wasn’t perfect, and I was still scared. But I did it anyway.
I gave myself a couple of weeks to prepare between the call and the scheduled class. I felt overwhelmed and unsure of where to even start. So I began with what I did know—my own story. I wrote down parts of my journey with anxiety on small note cards. I prayed and asked God to guide me in what He wanted me to share. Slowly, things began to come together. I was led to books, videos, and insights that helped shape the message I wanted to deliver.
When the day finally came, I asked my husband to come support me—and he did. I had my materials ready, and to my surprise, I felt excited. The presentation went so much better than I could have imagined. It turned into a meaningful discussion, and I could see the men and women in the room feeling inspired—ready to make positive changes for themselves and for their children.
As we were leaving, the director of the program approached us and said, “Women have been coming into my office in tears, asking if you can come back next week.”
We said yes—and we did.
Stepping into something unknown is always scary—especially when you can’t see the full purpose or the outcome. But I’ve learned something powerful: if you’re feeling a prompting or inspired thought, there will always be direction that follows. You will not be left alone to figure it out. Often, the resources and support have already been quietly prepared for your success.
I’ve come away from this experience more determined than ever to keep acting on those promptings—even when they feel uncomfortable. One thing that’s helped me build confidence is writing down each time I followed a thought or inspiration, and how it turned out. Those little records become evidence. And as your list grows, so does your faith. Before long, you’ll find yourself stepping forward with more boldness, trust, and courage.
