Are You More Like a Radio or an IPOD?
Aug 26, 2015
Ugh. I used to be sooooo good at self-discipline—before I got married and had kids.
I could give myself a command and follow it—no problem. I even took a little pride in my “exemplary existence” (cough, cough).
But everything changed when I became responsible for other people. Self-improvement goals like “do this for 30 minutes a day” became laughably unrealistic—because the kid who needs to throw up really doesn’t care what your calendar says right now.
Still, I’ve learned that unmet goals aren’t just about kids or chaos. While I wanted to blame my husband or children for every flub, I finally uncovered the real culprit behind my failure to follow through.
It was me.
My inner self. My core. My subconscious. My not-so-helpful insider, a.k.a. my evil twin.
Every time I tried to adopt a behavior that didn’t match my inner programming, a battle would break out—and I’d lose. Again and again.
But eventually, I figured out the trick:
If you want lasting change, you have to first change your inner core.
Once that happens, the outer struggle becomes way easier.
So… how do you change your core?
Let’s start with this:
Picture yourself as a radio.
If you're breathing, you're plugged in.
Your mind works like a receiver, constantly picking up signals from all around you—via the airwaves, the media, and everything else in your environment.
And I don’t just mean commercials or news headlines. I mean everything:
People around you, their words, their energy, the way they look, your surroundings, the weather outside, the cars going by…
These are all forms of data input. But—just like a radio—only certain signals will come through clearly. You might be surrounded by thousands of frequencies, but you're really only tuned in to one.
So ask yourself:
What’s been catching your attention lately?
What “station” are you currently tuned to?
Believe it or not, you can figure that out by looking at your outer conditions—your health, finances, relationships. These reflect the signals you’ve been receiving and responding to most.
Why? Because your behaviors shape your results.
And your behaviors are driven by your beliefs—especially the deep, subconscious ones.
It all comes back to how you see yourself, what you believe about life, and what you believe you deserve.
If you don’t like what you see in your life, it’s time to change the broadcast you’re tuned in to.
A Closer Look at Radios (and You)
Contrary to how it may seem, a radio doesn’t pull music into the room.
It doesn’t suck it in through the walls.
The music is already there—the radio just makes it audible.
That’s how it is with success principles and “the Law of Attraction.”
You don’t magically attract the things you want the moment you think right.
Rather, thinking right removes the blinders so you can finally see what’s already within reach.
So when I say, “Think of yourself as a radio,” I mean this:
The solution to your problem is already in the room with you—just like music is present even when the radio’s off. You just haven’t been tuned in.
Once you switch frequencies, the answer comes through like a flash of insight.
Like it did for the Wright brothers. The way to fly always existed—they just finally tuned in to the right idea.
The Smoker’s Trick
Take someone trying to quit smoking. If deep down they still identify as a smoker, leaving cigarettes alone feels unnatural—even painful.
But I heard of someone who, every time they felt tempted, would say in a casual, brush-it-off tone:
“Oh, I don’t do that anymore.”
Even when they didn’t fully believe it yet.
We are deeply affected by what we hear—especially from ourselves.
That simple phrase helped reprogram their subconscious faster, because they were telling their own ears a new truth.
Compare that to someone who says,
“I’m trying to quit, but it’s really hard.”
You can probably guess which one is more likely to succeed.
Affirmations: Changing the Station
Let’s say someone affirms,
“I am happy, healthy, and wealthy.”
At first, it might feel silly or even dishonest. But if they keep saying it—out loud—they’ll begin tuning in to a new frequency. They’ll start noticing ideas, opportunities, and solutions they used to overlook.
Why? Because they’ve shifted their awareness.
They’re in tune with a different “broadcast.”
“The solution is never on the same level…”
What about someone who’s financially stuck?
First, recognize this:
Every problem has a solution.
But you won’t find it at the same level of thinking that created the problem.
As Einstein said:
“The significant problems we face in life cannot be solved at the same level of thinking we were at when we created them.”
Translation: If your current results aren’t what you want, it’s not because you’re broken.
It’s because you haven’t yet tuned in to the frequency where the solution lives.
Think of the Frequencies…
How many radio stations are there in your town?
Hundreds?
And yet, depending on your dial, you’ll only hear ONE at a time.
That’s how life works. You’re surrounded by messages, people, and ideas all the time—some uplifting, some discouraging. Some helpful, some harmful.
If your mental dial is stuck on static, it’s no wonder life feels chaotic.
Static in = static out.
But if you feed your mind better data—uplifting input—you start getting better results.
That’s why what you allow into your mind matters.
Be Like an iPod (Not Just a Radio)
A radio will play whatever’s in the air. An iPod?
It only plays what you’ve loaded into it.
Be an iPod for a while.
Intentionally choose what you listen to. Feed your mind messages that elevate you. Seek out mentors, stories, and music that operate on the level where you want to be.
Do it until that level becomes your normal.
And if you don’t know how to access a higher frequency of inspiration, you can always listen to people who already live there. Their thoughts can carry you until your own thoughts are strong enough to sustain you.
How to Fill Your Mental iPod
Here are two simple steps:
-
Decide what you want out of life—and write it down. (Read The Jackrabbit Factor: Why You Can to see why this matters.)
-
Feel it as if it’s already true, even just for a few minutes today.
That’s it.
By doing this, you’ll shift frequencies. You’ll start noticing the very ideas and resources that were invisible before. You'll be naturally drawn to the people or tools you need next.
Gratitude = Divine Frequency
To receive the best inspiration—the kind that comes from God—tune in to His frequency through gratitude.
Be truly grateful for what is.
And then, go one step further:
Feel gratitude for what you want, as if you already have it.
That’s how you dial into the divine.
And that’s when the guidance comes.
