Property Tax Relief

guest posts help with finances Oct 07, 2019

By Steve Dragon

Over the year and a half leading up to October 2019, our financial situation kept getting worse. In my judgment, we hadn’t done enough to improve things on the income side, and instead had kept up our lifestyle using three credit cards and a home equity loan. By January 2019, we signed up for Social Security and still had a steady $200–300 a month coming in from our home-based business customers. But together, those two sources only made up about two-thirds of what we needed to meet our monthly obligations—never mind maintaining the lifestyle we were used to.

Then October hit, and we received the annual property tax bill—about $2,500 due in November. And of course, Christmas was coming too. We had absolutely no solution in sight.

I had prayed about our need to pay the taxes and, drawing from what we’d been learning in Mindset Mastery, I somehow trusted the money would come. I visualized and felt the taxes being paid. I had this strong sense that Heavenly Father approved of my desire and was ready to help meet that need. I didn’t know how or when—but I genuinely believed it would happen. I wasn’t worried.

Beckie, apparently, didn’t feel the same peace. In early December (by then a $25 late fee had been added to the tax bill), our ministering brother—who also happened to be our bishop—came to visit. We shared what was going on, and I told him how I felt about the taxes. I said I really believed the funds were coming and that we didn’t need to worry, even though I had no clue how or when it would happen.

But I think he noticed something in Beckie’s expression that didn’t quite match the calm I was describing. He said he wanted to help however he could. He was concerned about Beckie’s emotional state and mentioned that he knew of some resources that might be able to help with the taxes—and maybe a few other things too. I told him we’d be grateful for any help he could offer, but I also repeated that I believed the property taxes would be paid some other way. I truly had no doubt that unseen forces were already in motion, preparing exactly what we needed. I felt completely at peace.

Since January, our Social Security deposits had been arriving the second week of every month, like clockwork. So it wasn’t surprising when we received our usual deposit a week after the bishop’s visit. What was surprising was a second, smaller deposit that showed up at the same time. At first, I assumed we’d received someone else’s check by mistake. I called the Social Security Administration to report it. But they explained it wasn’t an error—it was a delayed back-payment from January, apparently a standard first-year adjustment.

The amount? Almost exactly what we needed for property taxes.

I let the bishop know the funds had come through, just as I’d believed they would. A couple of days later, he showed up at our door with a check from an anonymous donor. He told us it had already been in process before I sent him the update, but he still felt prompted to deliver it. The amount was completely unexpected and helped us catch up on several months of overdue bills.

I had known in my heart that the funds for the taxes were coming. I felt it. I trusted the process we’d been studying and learning about. Even when the “reality” others saw looked bleak, I could sense the unseen help already on its way.
