What is a “Poor Little Genius”?

A Poor Little Genius is someone with incredible, God-given gifts and talents tucked inside of them—but who might still be struggling financially or creatively because they haven’t yet discovered how to tap into those gifts.

The truth is, no matter how stuck or limited someone may feel, everyone is born with the capacity to receive “genius” ideas.

Take, for example, the woman from the Midwest who was constantly frustrated by the tumbleweeds blowing through her backyard and getting stuck in her fence. One day, just for fun, she put them up for sale online—and to her surprise, she ended up turning that joke into a full-blown business. Today, she sells tumbleweeds to high-end designers and movie producers.

She probably didn’t see her idea as “genius,” but it absolutely was. She simply responded creatively to a small irritation in her life.

That’s the secret: as long as you’ve got challenges, annoyances, or setbacks—you’ve got raw material for genius ideas.

Your own genius ideas are likely hovering right near the surface of your consciousness. And just like that woman, you might not even recognize them for what they are at first. But one of them—maybe even the one nudging at you right now—could be the idea that opens up big doors.

Years ago, after a financial setback, my husband and I were brainstorming ways to recover. We decided it was time for me to finish my third book—but a big obstacle popped up. While working through that problem, my husband had an idea that ended up generating more than $40,000 in just a couple of months.

Creative problem-solving is a skill. And like any skill, it can be learned.
