Making the Role Change Work

When the Role of Breadwinner Is Thrust Upon You: How Can You Make It Work?

If your plan was to be a stay-at-home mother for your entire adult life, and you now find yourself needing to financially support your family, it can feel overwhelming—like being dropped into the deep end without a life jacket.

Sure, there are practical steps to get you qualified for a job. Maybe you already have a bachelor’s degree or a teaching certificate. But what about your mind? Do you feel emotionally and mentally qualified to carry this new responsibility? Do you feel capable?

Listen to these thoughts:
“I can’t be a successful business owner.”
“I wasn’t meant to run a business or provide for my family.”
“I can’t make enough to support us—men are built for that.”
“As a mother, my job is to nurture, not to provide.”
“I don’t belong in the business world.”

Do any of those sound familiar?

Now… what if the opposite were true?

What if you could be a successful business owner? Can you picture what that might look like for you?

And if business ownership doesn’t feel like your path, what if you were meant to thrive in a corporate or government position? What if you could bring home a salary that not only met your family’s needs but provided in abundance?

Are there circumstances in which a mother is meant to provide the necessities of life for her children? And if you’re in one of those circumstances now—do you believe that God will make you equal to the challenge?

What if He could magnify your efforts and make you capable of more than you ever imagined?

What if you do belong in the business world? What if there are people out there who need you—your personality, your unique gifts, your lived experience?

There’s a reason you’re where you are right now. Sit with that. Reflect on these questions. And as you answer them, begin to craft a vision for yourself—what you want your life to look like from here on out.

Then ask yourself honestly: Do I believe I’m good enough? Am I worthy to carry out this mission that’s been placed before me?

If the answer feels like “no,” don’t panic. Just remember: you’re not doing this alone. You have access to divine guidance and inspiration. You’ll be supported as you take steps toward your new vision.

Here’s one powerful tool that can help:

Grab a pen and paper. As you reflect on the questions above, write down every negative or fearful thought that comes to mind. Get it all out. Don’t filter it.

Then, put those thoughts on trial.
For example, if you write, “I’m not capable of earning money,” challenge it.

Is that always true?
Have you ever earned money before? As a teenager? Babysitting? Tutoring? Working part-time?
Could you do something—even something small—to bring in income now? Could you sell something? Babysit? Donate plasma?

Write down every reason why your original statement is not the whole truth. Then, craft a new statement—a truth you want to live by.

For example:
“My skills and resources create financial abundance for my family. I easily bring in all the money we need each month.”

Use that new statement as a daily affirmation—morning and night. Let it reshape your mindset and raise your vibration. Let it become the truth you step into.

Soon, you’ll find yourself becoming the woman you envisioned—doing the work, providing the abundance, and owning your role with grace and strength.
