How to make changes that really last
Jun 25, 2018
Today, my thoughts are on the topic of change — how to change, why we don’t change, and how to create changes that truly last. Let’s explore this together, shall we?
Years ago, I learned in a science class that all living things are driven toward growth. That’s one key sign that something is alive. Deep down, I believe we all want to grow, evolve, and improve different parts of our lives — even when we feel content — because growth is woven into our very nature as living beings.
But change can be tough, and one big reason is this: Programs.
Programs are like software running quietly in the background of our minds. They execute instructions, much like the programs controlling self-driving cars. Most of the time, these silent, 24/7 programs steer us toward places we don’t really want to go. Not because they’re evil — they simply do what they’re designed to do: help us live into the images we hold most strongly in our minds, fueled by where we put the most intense energy.
Here’s the catch: if we’ve spent a lot of time worrying about failure or fearing rejection, those programs will subconsciously direct us to behave in ways that deliver exactly those outcomes. We’ve programmed our minds through repetition — thoughts charged with positive or negative emotion.
Even trickier, some of these programs were installed long before we were old enough to understand right from wrong. Many of those early programs are the worst offenders. If we don’t identify, uninstall, quarantine, or replace these faulty mental programs, our life’s destination is likely to be a big disappointment.
Some programs on our mental hard drive were uploaded by outside influences — accepted and adopted by us. Each program, when triggered by certain data input, guides us to think a particular way about that data. That thinking shapes our behavior. And our behaviors naturally produce the circumstances we live in — all driven by the programs behind them.
So if we want to change our behaviors or circumstances, the place to start is clear: take inventory and upgrade your mental software.
Your mind — the most marvelous computer ever designed — started receiving data even before you were born. As you grew, you gathered data without knowing you had the power to choose how to interpret it. When you didn’t know how to process what happened to you, you looked to your parents or trusted role models to adopt thinking habits that helped you fit in with the world you were born into.
If they hated money, you learned to hate money.
If they worried about having enough, you learned to worry too.
If they got angry when things went wrong, you learned to do the same.
It’s not their fault, and it’s not your fault — we’re all just doing the best we can with the tools we have. The good news? Regardless of your background, there’s good to be found in every family environment — positive or negative. Once you discover your power to choose, your upbringing no longer has to determine your success.
It’s time to recognize that how we think is ultimately our choice.
Even though your current results come directly from how your mind has processed past inputs — experiences, conversations, media — you can start right now to override any program holding you back.
Here’s how the process works:
Data comes in → programs run → triggers are tripped → we react → we experience results
-
Data = everything we perceive through our five senses — experiences, words heard, others’ behaviors, health, finances, and so on.
-
Programs = long-established thought patterns or conditioned behaviors.
-
Triggers = events that bug, offend, anger, hurt, or disappoint us.
When new data enters your mind (say, seeing a late bill, hearing criticism, or feeling your clothes tighten), your subconscious programs recognize patterns from past experiences. When there’s a match, a program activates, triggering a response that mimics your first reaction — not necessarily the best one, but the familiar and therefore “safe” choice.
(After all, you didn’t die the first time, so subconsciously, it’s a safer bet than any other possible response—which, who knows, could be fatal! Or so it thinks.)
To get better results, we have a few options:
-
Control the data input
-
Respond differently to our triggers
-
Or change our programs.
But here’s the truth: no matter how hard we try, we can’t always control the data input. What we can control is how we respond to that data. The problem? It’s not easy to control our responses when they’re triggered by one of those deeply embedded programs. Our reactions tend to be automatic — like a self-driving car barreling straight ahead when we actually want to take the next exit.
So if changing the data input isn’t always possible, and if we’re not yet masters at choosing different responses to our triggers, that leaves one powerful path: changing our programs.
When we change our programs, it no longer matters what data comes in. It no longer matters what triggers get pulled. This is where we reclaim our power, our agency. Changing our programs directly changes our results — putting us back in the driver’s seat with full control over the direction of our lives.
So ask yourself:
-
How long have I been struggling with my relationships?
-
How long have I wrestled with financial stress?
-
How long have I felt this way about myself?
-
How long have I been addicted to _________?
With these programs running in the subconscious mind, the same results keep repeating, sadly predictable.
Do you want things to change?
I promise you this:
When you upload a better internal program, better results naturally follow. With new, positive programs running, you’ll be amazed at how people’s responses to you improve. Healthy habits will become second nature. Money will start flowing in faster than you spend it. All of this happens naturally as you upgrade your thinking — thanks to Universal Law, which never fails.
Ask yourself:
Are you 100% excited about your life just as it is?
If not, if you want to see changes in your relationships, environment, finances, or health, then it’s time to stop struggling with changes that never stick. Your mind is the most incredible computer ever created, and the only thing that needs to change are the programs you allow it to run.
What programs are running in your mind right now?
If you’re always strapped for time or money, there’s likely a subconscious program making sure that never changes. That’s your “truth” about life — the way you’ve accepted life to be. A new truth won’t take root until you scan your mind for the “virus” infecting your beliefs. You have to turn it off, uninstall it, or at least quarantine it. And most importantly, turn on a program that supports the truth YOU choose:
I have all that I need. I have plenty of time and money to fulfill all that God put me here to do.
No matter how successful you are, always check for programs that aren’t serving you.
I thought I had life pretty well figured out. After consciously learning and applying these principles for six years, I was happy with my results. I felt like I had all the understanding and tools I needed to keep improving. But a trusted mentor convinced me to attend one more training, where I uncovered a major program running my life — one I had only superficially noticed before.
Even though I was pleased with my progress, my mind opened up to a whole new level of possibility as I recognized this hidden program and took action to change it. As the saying goes: Pigs don’t know pigs stink. Sometimes we have to submit ourselves to new experiences before we see deeper areas for growth. The rewards from that kind of self-exploration are incredible.
So, I’d like to invite you to attend a seminar that will help you do just that. The cost? $10,000.
bam -
Bam -
BAM!
Did you notice any of your programs firing when you saw the price: $10,000?
Maybe one said:
“I can’t afford that, no matter how good it is.” Or...
“What a scam.” Or...
“She’s just trying to make a buck off me.” Or...
“Pshh. That’s nothing.” Or...
“I’d have to go into debt if I did that.” Or...
“No seminar could be worth that kind of money.”
Did any of those pop up for you? Or did you get a different thought entirely?
Maybe it said:
“Wow, sounds powerful. I’m going to find a way to be there. There’s got to be a way.”
I challenge you to look at how you responded to this simple data input: the program costs $10,000.
Can you trace back to when, in your life, the program that fired in response to that price first formed?
If you don’t remember, you might just discover it—if you allow yourself to experience another life-changing event or training.
Did you catch the response that said, “Pshh. That’s a drop in the bucket”? There are people who think that way, too—and might refuse to go because if it’s that affordable, it must not be very valuable.
Isn’t it fascinating how one simple statement—just some numbers on a page—triggers totally different programs in each person who sees it? The data itself is meaningless dots until we assign meaning. But most of the time, we don’t even realize we assigned that meaning. It’s so automatic, so lightning fast.
Side note:
Be careful not to judge a person’s mindset by their outward circumstances.
Even if someone isn’t wealthy now, having a healthy wealth-consciousness puts them in a magnetic state that attracts the people, events, and opportunities they need for abundance to show up in real life. It’s not where you are that matters — it’s where you’re pointed. The way you think determines your direction.
So don’t be dazzled by someone who appears to “have it all.” You don’t know their inner world, or whether they’re headed toward disaster. Likewise, don’t underestimate someone who appears to have nothing. They could be headed toward remarkable success, poised to surpass those who seem to have it all now.
I challenge YOU to act as if you already have the qualities you want. Ask yourself: How would a wise, wealthy person respond to an opportunity to learn something new?
When people say, “I can’t afford that,” they’ve already shut down the part of themselves that senses the idea — the part that does see a way to invest in themselves without risking other financial obligations.
If you thought, “I’d have to go into debt for that,” then yes, you might attend, but predictably incur debt to do it. But did you know it doesn’t have to be that way? Don’t give me the “fixed income” excuse — that’s just a story. You can attend, even if the money isn’t there right now. Going into debt is an option, but not the only one.
“But where will the money come from?”
Wherever it is now. Don’t shut out the solution by deciding there isn’t one!
Instead of freaking out over not having $10,000 for a seminar that could change your life, take a deep breath. Picture yourself feeling joy and breakthroughs. Tune your mind to the way to get there by relaxing and moving forward “as though.” Make the commitment. Expect to find a way. Don’t wait for all green lights before pulling out of the driveway — you’ll hit some reds, but don’t stay home because of a few stops. Your solution already exists — you’ll probably find it right at the edge of what you can do right now.
The person who hopes for and expects to find a way is the one who finds the way. Those who let the program “I can’t afford it” dictate their choices stay stuck.
Now, I know — a seminar won’t change your life; you will. But a seminar can provide the environment and support to help you get it done.
And no, I’m not actually offering a $10,000 seminar — just an example.
But there is a seminar I highly recommend:
