Love and Money in the Time of Corona

guest posts help with finances law of polarity parenting relationships Oct 20, 2019

In every difficult circumstance, there is the seed of something good—and the good is in proportion to the difficulty. I can think of many moments in my life that have helped me understand this principle, known as the Law of Polarity, and use that awareness to keep my thoughts elevated. But today, because it’s the elephant in the room, I’m going to reflect on the good that has come into my life through the worldwide pandemic.

If COVID-19 had struck 20 or 30 years earlier, I don’t think I would have bounced back as quickly—or seen the good in it so clearly. Back then, I was younger, far less experienced in dealing with adversity, and unaware of the Laws of Relativity and Polarity. I also had small children at home, and the added stress of quarantine, homeschooling, and fear for their health—on top of the regular pressure of parenting—could very well have tipped me into depression.

But I’m not that person anymore. Now, at the ripe old age of 58, I’ve gained enough wisdom and experience to recognize the blessings embedded in even the hardest situations. And 2020, for all its disruption, delivered some deeply meaningful gifts.

The first unexpected gift came in March. I was supposed to attend a conference in Arizona, but it was canceled. However, I had already arranged to meet my daughter there for some specialized therapy—and housing had already been provided—so I went anyway. Without the distraction of meetings, I was fully present with her after each of her intensive therapy sessions. We had quiet, uninterrupted time to talk through what she was learning and feeling. Our relationship deepened and softened. When we said goodbye at the end of our stay, we were both in tears, so grateful for the rare and precious connection we had shared.

The second blessing also centered around family. Our oldest son and the daughter I just mentioned both live in New York City, one of the early hot spots for COVID-19. In March, they both lost their jobs—one in the restaurant industry, the other in theater. Our son had planned a short trip home to celebrate his April birthday, but when his college moved all classes online, he decided to stay longer. A few weeks later, our daughter—lonely without her brother in their shared apartment—flew home, too.

From April through July, we had two of our three children back under our roof. It felt like old times. We played games, watched movies, celebrated birthdays, stayed up late having philosophical conversations—and just lived life together again. We hadn’t had that much uninterrupted time with them in years. I’ll always remember that sweet season as our family’s “love in the time of Corona.”

A third benefit came in the form of finances. The combination of stimulus checks and unemployment compensation allowed our children to repay loans we had given them over the past decade. Because they could repay us, we were in turn able to pay off some of our own debts. One of the most amazing moments came when we were able to fully pay off the bill for my daughter’s therapy in Arizona—just before the credit card began accruing interest. I had put it on the card knowing, thanks to my understanding of the Law of Vibration, that somehow, the money would come. And it did.

There were many more blessings that came from our COVID experience—far too many to fit into a single article. But I can say with confidence that the good that came was equal to, if not greater than, the challenges and stress we endured. That is the Law of Polarity in action.

When things go wrong, the good is already in it—if we’re willing to look for it and take advantage of it. And when things go very wrong, there’s even more good hiding in the folds of difficulty—if we remember that it’s there and stay alert enough to see it.

So bring on COVID-20!

Just kidding.
