Lessons of Love from my Grandma

My grandparents bought land on a hill in the southeast corner of Arizona. Their dream? To grow an apricot orchard and a huge garden where they could harvest and sell their own produce. People thought they were crazy. They said nothing would grow on that rocky patch of land.
Thankfully, my grandparents didn’t listen.
They held tight to their vision of a thriving garden and orchard. And while it took years of hard work—and plenty of trial and error—their dream eventually literally bore fruit (and vegetables!). That garden provided for them for many years.
As they got older, the garden shrank. Toward the end of her life, my grandma mostly grew strawberries. But let me tell you—those strawberries were unreal. And the jam she made from them? Nothing short of legendary.
After my husband finished school, we moved back to that same town and into our very first home with a yard. I was thrilled. I’d finally get to plant a garden! And of course, I called the one person who I just knew could walk me through every step.
I still remember that phone call.
I said, “Grandma, I want to plant a garden, and I have no idea how to do it—but I know you can tell me everything I need to know.”
To my surprise, she replied, “I can’t tell you how to plant a garden.”
I was stunned. “What do you mean?” I said. “You grew the most amazing fruits and vegetables in this exact area—with barely any water—on land that’s mostly sand and rock!”
She explained that she couldn’t tell me how to do it because she didn’t know my soil… my water… or even what I wanted to grow.
I realized I hadn’t really thought it through. I just wanted a garden like the ones I remembered from childhood and assumed she could give me a ready-made list of what to do. But she said I’d need to decide what I wanted to plant, read the instructions on the back of the seed packets, and then just try it out. If something didn’t work? Try something else.
I got off the phone feeling a little disappointed—almost like she didn’t want to help me.
But now, years later, I realize: she was teaching me something much deeper.
At the time, I didn’t understand the Law of Gestation the way my grandma did. She may not have called it that, or even known there was a “law” for it—but she understood the principle.
As it says in Mindset Mastery by Trevan and Leslie Householder:
“Plant your own idea seeds, and then be patient. Don’t uproot your idea seed with doubt.”
She knew that what worked in her garden wouldn’t necessarily work in mine. And she knew that unless I had clarity on what I wanted and believed in the possibility of it, I’d likely give up at the first obstacle.
She still answered my questions when I had them. But first, I had to be willing to explore, be patient, and trust the process.
Now, in my work as a weight loss coach, I often see this same pattern. Especially in the beginning, clients just want me to tell them what to eat. They don’t want to think about it. They don’t trust their own judgment.
It actually makes me laugh now—because I find myself giving them advice that sounds a lot like what my grandma told me.
I say, “First, get clear about what you want. Then assess where you are right now. Start paying attention to the foods you’re eating—read the back of the package, like reading the back of a seed packet.”
We make regular assessments and adjust as we go. Yes, I offer more detailed support, but the core idea is the same:
Progress comes through trial and error.
You’ve got to stay mindful, observant, and above all—patient.
Obstacles will come. Listen for inspiration and keep moving forward.
It takes faith to trust that the seeds you’ve planted will eventually bring the results you’re hoping for. The Law of Gestation reminds us not to give up just because things don’t unfold exactly how or when we expected.
If the seed has been properly planted, and you hold the vision with faith, what you want is on its way.
