Influencing Outcomes, Not Others

mastery student spotlight May 01, 2025

Meet Grace Lewis, Mindset Mastery Graduate. Grace's journey through Mindset Mastery showcases the power of faith and positive thinking. By trusting in God's timing and aligning her thoughts with her goals, she focused on the things she could control, and trusted in God to handle the things she could not control. Her story is a testament to the impact of mindset and belief in the good that can come from every experience.

Starting Small

During the Phase 1 experiment, Grace focused on a simple but specific goal: experiencing no lines on the rides at Silver Dollar City during Spring Break. Normally, the lines are long and it’s exhausting. However, Grace visualized this outcome, and said:

“Every ride I went to with my children didn’t have a line or it was very short vs my husband and other children who stood in some lines that were 2 hours long when we were there during Spring Break.”

For anyone who has visited amusement parks during Spring Break, they can likely relate to how remarkable this is, and it is an excellent example that demonstrates the power of visualization. It also serves as a great example of setting small, inconsequential goals to build confidence and trust in the process.

Here's an AI visualization of her experience:

 Visualizing the Dream Home

For her Phase 2 goal, Grace decided to visualize a more significant desire: living in a home with walk-in closets, one that is organized, and has a pool.

Knowing what she hoped for, Grace focused on the emotions she would feel once this goal was realized. She wrote about this vision she had for their home in her Transformational Journal earlier in the year. She had also set a specific date–May 21st–and then continued to focus on the emotions she would feel once the goal was realized.

She then shared:

“My sister called me out of the blue saying they wanted to sell their house and build. [She said] that her house was too big for them since they have 2 children and didn’t need the extra space. We are now closing on a house that has walk-in closets and a pool!”

Grace story is a powerful example of how faith and visualization can align with life’s opportunities. She described how, seemingly out of nowhere, her sister contacted her with an offer to sell their house—a house that perfectly matched the vision Grace had been holding onto. This house, complete with walk-in closets and a pool, was exactly what she had been visualizing. By focusing on what we truly desire, and trusting in God’s timing, we can be led to opportunities that fulfill our deepest aspirations.

Overcoming Fear with Faith

Despite the excitement of finding the perfect house, Grace faced a significant challenge: her sister initially didn’t want to move out until after their new house was built, which would delay Grace’s plans to move in by the summer.

She shared:

“The fear came in when [my sister] told me she didn’t want to move out till after their house was built. I had visualized us being in a house this summer to enjoy swimming and inviting friends over. So, I just continued to visualize that and then she wanted to sit down and talk and I explained that we wanted to be there while our 18-year old son could help us move before he left on his mission. He leaves July 2nd. I also said that he would love to be able to have friends over to swim before he goes. Her heart softened and she said that we could move in this summer and they are going to live in our current house while they build.”

There is an important lesson here, and a question that often comes up: Can we use the laws of thought to convince someone else of our own desire, or convince them to change their mind?

When it comes to changing someone else's mind, it's important to understand that each person has their own free agency. The laws of thought cannot override another person's free will. Trying to use these laws to change someone else's mind would not only be ineffective, but also contrary to God’s Law.

In this case, Grace held to her vision, expressed her desire, and allowed her sister to choose her response. We don't have to manage the creative process. Sometimes the answer will be no, so I encourage all goal statements to include "all this, or something better." When things don't go the way you hope, look for evidence that it can and will be better in some way.

Again, the laws of thought are best used to influence our own mindset and behavior, which can, in turn, inspire or influence others indirectly. You can see this in Grace’s story. She did her own work by visualizing her own vision, and ultimately, that led to a conversation with her sister, and her sister’s heart was softened.

While we can't predict outcomes with absolute certainty, our mindset plays a crucial role in shaping the likelihood of a positive result. When we approach situations with the belief that everything works for our good, we align ourselves with possibilities, and it helps us remain resilient and hopeful, knowing that, ultimately, the outcome will serve our highest good.

By focusing on changing ourselves—our perspectives, reactions, and energy—we can create an environment that encourages positive change in others. However, this change comes from their own choice, not from any direct manipulation of their thoughts.

Advice for Others Facing Fear

When asked what advice she would give to someone facing their fears, Grace shared this message:

“Fear not, doubt not. Feel the joy and gratitude of having what you desire now. It will be attracted into your space.”

In reflecting on her journey, Grace shows how a strong, positive mindset created remarkable changes in her life. While we may not always predict the exact outcomes, her experiences demonstrate that when we trust in the process and believe that everything works for our good, we open ourselves up to unexpected blessings. Grace’s story reminds us that with faith, focus, and the right mindset, we can navigate challenges, attract opportunities, and ultimately see God’s hand in every step of our journey.
