Crashing vs. Resting

"Should we call this ‘crashing’ or ‘rest’?"
While brainstorming story ideas with my daughter to illustrate the Law of Rhythm, we flipped through Hidden Treasures by Leslie Householder for inspiration.
“We used to think of it as a crash,” she said. “And now we call it intentional rest. But for a good amount of time there, we didn’t know that we were experiencing the Law of Rhythm.”
So what exactly do we mean by crashing or resting? Let me explain.
Crashing vs. Resting
When I first started with Herbalife (yes, network marketing!), I didn’t come from a traditional business background. I relied heavily on those in my upline, soaking in every system I could learn and replicate to scale my business.
Now, I know network marketing isn’t everyone’s cup of tea—and that’s totally fine—but that chapter of my life taught me a lot. One of the biggest lessons? It was full of what I used to call crashes.
Here’s what would happen: I’d throw myself fully into growing my business for months, pushing hard toward the next “level.” And once I hit the goal? Boom—I’d crash.
These crashes weren’t small. They would wipe me out for two solid months, usually right around November through February (which also lined up with other business responsibilities I had at the time).
I’d lose all momentum, and I started to question whether I was even cut out to lead a large organization. It took some serious coaching and self-reflection to realize what was actually going on.
What I had been calling “crashing” was really just the Law of Rhythm at work.
The Law of Rhythm
Every time I hit a major milestone, I would inevitably experience a period of exhaustion. And had I understood the Law of Rhythm more clearly back then, I might have seen it coming.
Just like the tides ebb and flow, just like seasons shift, rest is built into the cycle of success.
Leslie Householder defines the Law of Rhythm this way:
“The Law of Rhythm states that nature’s movements are cyclical. There is repetition in everything.”
Once I saw this clearly, I realized that the “crash” wasn’t a personal flaw or something to be ashamed of—it was a natural, necessary part of growth. A time for recovery and reflection. A period meant for rest, not regret.
And that changed everything.
Facilitator Training 2022 – Scheduling Rest on Purpose
Fast forward to 2022 and the Rare Faith Facilitator Training. After a season of incredible momentum and breakthrough, I knew what was coming next.
And this time, I was ready.
Instead of fearing the inevitable energy dip, I scheduled intentional rest right into my calendar. Not as an afterthought or a collapse—but as a planned, protected rhythm.
I had finally come full circle (yet another rhythm metaphor!).
After high activity comes a need for rest. That’s not failure. That’s wisdom.
Key Takeaways for You
I hope my story helped you spot some of your own rhythms—your own natural cycles of energy and effort.
Here are two key takeaways I’d love for you to consider:
-
Schedule rest on purpose. I’m not just talking about a bath and a face mask (though yes, please do those too!). I’m talking about real, intentional stillness. Block it off on your calendar and protect it like a meeting with your future self.
-
The rhythm will find you—whether you welcome it or not. If you don’t pause intentionally, you may end up forced to. And I’d rather you choose rest than be cornered into it.
As Leslie Householder puts it in Hidden Treasures:
“Rhythms of life often feel random, too. The ups and downs can be chaotic and jarring. But what if we could see a pattern in them?”
This week, I invite you to take a look at your life’s rhythms. In your days, your weeks, your seasons—where do you notice patterns? And how might you learn to trust them, even in the harder phases?
I hope my journey helps you along yours.
With heart,
Helen Huntsman
