Choosing a Powerful Cause

guest posts law of cause and effect Jul 16, 2008

The Law of Cause and Effect is so straightforward, it almost feels like it doesn’t need an explanation at all: “Whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.” — Galatians 6:7.

Speaking of sowing seeds, I love to garden. My favorite thing to plant is green beans. They just keep producing—again and again—throughout the long summer days, until eventually I get tired of picking them. It gets hot, I lose motivation, I forget to water, and before long, the plants wither and die. Then, when I finally find myself craving green beans again, all I have are canned ones—and I’m reminded just how much better fresh garden beans tasted.

Sure, canned beans are easier. But they’re never as satisfying.

So let me ask you: What kind of satisfaction do you want in your life? What are the things you really want? Maybe it's more money, better relationships, improved health, a more fulfilling job, higher education, or just more joy. For each of these desires, there is a cause—a seed—you can plant today to reap the result you’re hoping for.

I believe that when we choose a powerful cause, it can lead to a wide range of positive effects. It helps us focus our energy and attention with intention. I remember searching for a cause that would give more life to my goals and help me step into the person I knew I could become. The phrase that came to me was: “I will give extraordinary service in all areas of my life.”

Let me share a simple example.

Not long ago, my neighbor put up a For Sale sign in her yard. It bothered me. I felt a little ticked—like someone was about to disrupt the peace I’d come to enjoy. On top of that, I had recently allowed some unkind thoughts about her to fester in my mind, which meant the energy between us wasn’t what it used to be. And that was on me. I knew it was time to shift both my thinking and my behavior.

That week, I saw on the church bulletin that her birthday was coming up on Sunday. I could’ve just wished her a quick “Happy Birthday” in passing, but something in me wanted to go beyond that. Just the desire to do something more softened my heart and put a smile on my face. I started thinking about what she might enjoy. I remembered a CD I’d just gotten—something I knew she would love. So I wrapped it up, pulled out a card from my stash, wrote a personal and sincere note, and walked next door.

She welcomed me in warmly. We had a beautiful twenty-minute visit. She loved the CD, and she said the card meant even more. We hugged and said, “I love you.” I walked home with a spring in my step and joy in my heart. And to think—I could’ve just said “Happy Birthday” at church.

It was such a simple thing. But when I choose to live with the mindset of “extraordinary service,” I naturally start thinking at a higher level. I give more of my best in any situation.

Instead of just asking someone how they’re doing, I listen—really listen.
Instead of checking off a to-do list, I prioritize what’s most important and follow through.
Instead of grabbing whatever food is convenient, I make intentional, healthy choices.
Instead of just doing good, I aim to do better.
And instead of just being better, I aim to be extraordinary.

Consciously applying the Law of Cause and Effect has made me a believer. It works for things money can buy—and for the things it can’t. Rather than settling for average, I’ve found that doing extraordinary things helps my business grow, deepens my relationships, and brings greater purpose to my everyday actions. Instead of expecting average results from those I teach, I encourage and inspire them to aim higher—and I watch them rise to the challenge.

I expect a joyful and abundant harvest in all areas of my life, because those are the seeds I’m planting.

So, how does your garden grow?
It’s up to you.
It’s your choice.

It’s the law.
