Allow this Law to Work for You

Have you ever sat back and wondered, “Where am I headed?” or “What do I want to do—or be—when I grow up?” If you’re anything like me, that thought has crossed the screen of your mind more than once, regardless of age or stage of life. Sometimes, I have to laugh at myself when the question rises again: “What do I want to be when I grow up?” It’s funny because, technically, I am a grown-up—shouldn’t I already have this all figured out?
Just the other day, my wife and I were deep in conversation as I wrestled with that same old question and reflected on the Law of Perpetual Transmutation. I asked her if she could think of any specific moment from our lives that tied into that law. I couldn’t pinpoint one myself, so I was curious to hear her perspective. She gave me a knowing look, smiled, and said, “That’s our whole life.”
In that moment, it clicked. She was absolutely right.
Over the course of our twelve years of marriage, life has taken many turns—some expected, many not. And even though the path hasn’t always been clear, we’ve been blessed along the way—with children, new job opportunities, and more. Each change brought its own set of blessings. And yet, despite all the growth, I could feel that something was missing—a kind of void waiting to be filled.
When we first got married, the possibilities felt endless. We had big dreams, and they were bold and crystal clear. But then “life” happened. Bills piled up, responsibilities increased, and unexpected expenses kept us on edge. Without realizing it, those dreams began to fade. Not because we didn’t care about them, but because the weight of surviving month to month left little room for vision. Our desire dimmed under the pressure.
So how does this all tie into the Law of Perpetual Transmutation? And what is that law, anyway?
In Hidden Treasures by Leslie Householder, the law is described this way: “That’s just a fancy way of saying that everything is either coming into physical form or going out of it.” To help explain it, the book uses the example of water and its many forms.
Water can appear as gas, as clouds, as rain, or even as solid ice. But we all know from experience that these forms can shift at any time. A cloud doesn’t always turn to rain—it can dissipate and return to gas. That transformation is not guaranteed; it’s in constant motion.
The same is true for our thoughts, dreams, and desires. Every time we hold an idea in our mind—something we want deeply—it begins forming. And as long as we keep it alive in our thoughts and truly believe in it, that idea continues moving toward physical reality. I’ve seen this in my own life: I’ve ended up in certain jobs because I held onto the thought that they would bring the results I hoped for. Eventually, the pieces fell into place, and the thought became reality.
But here’s the other side: when new opportunities or pressures distracted me from the original dream, that dream began to fade. As my focus shifted to surviving and solving immediate concerns, my larger vision lost its form. It didn’t vanish completely—it just started to evaporate, returning to its gas state, drifting further from becoming something tangible, like ice.
Here’s what brings me peace: I know my dreams can still become real. The Law of Perpetual Transmutation tells me that it’s possible—by law—as long as I allow the process to unfold without letting fear or doubt take over. When I trust the process, when I hold onto the vision and nurture it, I know life can deliver everything I hope for.
So if you’ve let go of dreams or feel stuck, take heart. The law applies to you, too. Your desires can—and will—take shape, if you keep your thoughts aligned with them. As Hidden Treasures puts it, “Circumstances and things are perpetually coming or going according to your thoughts.” Trust the process. Stay focused. And let your dreams materialize—one thought at a time.
